It's the beginning of Summer and it has been RAINING!!! We had a drought last year, but it's looking like this year might be different! One thing I can say with utmost assurance is that living in a yurt brings you VERY close to nature! I take comfort in knowing that round structures handle wind better than square buildings, but hail on a canvas roof feels a little nerve-wracking ...
This morning my husband let me sleep in since he isn't working today. I woke up to all of my girls staring out the window at our other tent we left up over the weekend (because yes, we had to try "camping"), flying like a kite stuck to the swing set! Matt had run out to save the tent and the girls were watching him. I looked out the back window and the tops of these trees (see the picture below) were actually bending at an almost 90 degree angle due to the wind! I honestly thought that we had a tornado going through. It was actually just a severe thunderstorm, but it felt like more!
One thing I noticed last summer and this summer is that, truly, the round structure of the yurts does handle the impact of wind far better than a traditional home. However, if you are over stimulated by loud noises, be forewarned ... a yurt is VERY loud! There have been times, when we've not been able to watch TV during a storm, because the sound of the rain falling on the roof was too loud to hear the TV (subtitles are a go-to around here)! We also hear ALL of nature (and sometimes not so much nature ... IE: a car driving by) very clearly and loudly. If the sound of birds, or a deer right outside your house is not appealing to you, a yurt might not be for you! It's taken some getting used to, for sure!
With that said, we do have all of the amenities of a traditional home, and otherwise for the most part, live fairly comfortably in our Yurt Home (aside from it still being a construction zone inside). So comfortably, in fact, that our girls wanted to try traditional camping! Which we did on Friday night, and our girls showed us EXACTLY why we've never taken them camping before! We got to bed late, none of us slept, and we were up before 6 am!

We didn't stray too far from the house for this "camping" experience. It was a wise decision.
